Testing, Repairing and Installing Home telephone Wiring - Telephone Wiring

Telephone Wiring

Telephone wire normally used for inside installation contains four individually colored conductors. The wire is solid copper in either 22 or 24 gauge. See Tables A and Table B for wire color codes and spacing from other wire conductors.

TABLE A: Recommended wire spacing **

Radio and Television	Antenna lead and ground wires	4 inches
Signal or Control Wires	Open wiring or wires in conduit or cable	None required
Communications Wire	CATV system coaxial cables with grounded sheaths	None required
Outdoor Telephone Wire	Aerial or buried drop wire or other telephone cables	2 inches
Lighted Sign	Neon signs and associated wiring from transformer	6 inches
Lightning Protection	Lightning rods and wires	6 feet

** Telephone wire must be installed with these minimum separations from other wires in both parallel and crossing applications.
